Impact testing, commonly referred to as Gmax testing, measures the surface hardness created by compaction from over use and shock-attenuation performance of sports fields. Gmax testing can be performed on both natural turf and artificial (synthetic) turf sports fields. Gmax testing is used to determine the degree of field hardness, which can estimate the potential for serious athlete injury. A study conducted by Penn State University reported that more favorable field conditions could reduce athlete injuries or reduce the severity of injuries by up to 20%. Gmax testing is a fundamental tool for testing the safety and playability of sports fields.
